EoE (Eosinophilic Oesophagitis) – hard to say and even harder to swallow
EoE is a rare inflammatory disease of the oesophagus causing patients to have swallowing difficulties. While symptoms may vary, patients typically feel like food is travelling slowly down the oesophagus and there may be a sensation of food sticking, usually in the chest. In some cases this can lead to a food bolus obstruction which may mean a visit to A&E.
Due to the lack of awareness around EoE, those who suffer from the symptoms may not know that EoE is a treatable condition. So, they don’t go to see their GP to get it checked out.
Lack of awareness also includes healthcare professionals. Like those in A&E who see people with food stuck in their oesophagus but don’t know that EoE is the most likely underlying cause. Without appropriate follow-up, the opportunity to effectively treat is missed, and patients may very well go back to square one with another food bolus obstruction.
The aim of this site is to share resources to help improve education and increase awareness of EoE within the healthcare community. Whether you are an expert looking for teaching slides, or someone who has come across EoE for the first time and would like to know more, simply click on the button relevant to your specialty or requirement to find resources.
Twenty years ago, less than a paper a month was published on EoE. Today, it’s more than one paper every day. To help you find recently added or updated content when you revisit the site, you’ll find “What’s new” at the start of each section.
If you have an idea for additional content that you think others would find useful, please email us at eoe@drfalk.co.uk to let us know.
